Doug and Kay met in the summer of 2007, although technically they also met in 1999 when they were both on the Woodrow Wilson Middle School track team and in 2000 when Doug gave Kay a drum lesson the morning of the Grandin Road Holiday Parade.

Doug and Kay got engaged in Paris, France on September 25, 2012. Doug popped the question on Pont Neuf after nervously eating a very heavy French dinner.
Doug is a 2006 graduate of the University of Kentucky (BA, Journalism) and a 2009 graduate of Virginia Commonwealth University (MA, English, Writing & Rhetoric). Kay is a 2009 graduate of George Mason University (BA, Global Affairs). Both Doug and Kay are 2013 graduates of the George Mason University School of Public Policy, where they earned their Master of Public Policy and Master of Science in Peace Operations, respectively. Doug is a policy analyst for the Department of Defense, and Kay is a program specialist U.S. Institute of Peace.
They currently reside in Arlington, Virginia, with their two cats, Stan and Lucy.
